Kilgobbin Castle is a well preserved tower house on the west bank of the river Bandon, a few miles from Kinsale. The dwelling houses beside the castle was abandoned in the 1960’s.
The tower is said to have been built by the MacCarthy Reaghs. The tower contains two levels of barrell vaulting. It is a tall square tower in good restoration. It exactly resembles in construction several other Castles which were built on this river.
In 2004, conservation work was carried out on the Castle by Martin McCarthy. This involved cleaning down and re-pointing the stone, restoring windows and stonework, removing a large oak tree which had grown on top of the castle, replacing the battlements and putting a slate roof back on the castle.
